Green Men

Ya, Hockey again.

What do you expect? It's Vancouver.

I know I have already admitted in a past post that I hate hockey.

Nothing new there.

Unfortunately, my American husband, who at the beginning of last year had no idea what a hockey puck was - even when he held it in his hand* - is now a rabid fan of the Canucks.

What monster have we created????

I should have told him that NO ONE watches hockey here in Canada.  Unfortunately, he went to work and the guys there indoctrinated him - good.

So I will be posting about.....some of the most significant people/things related to HOCKEY....whilst my husband watches the game (Canucks vs Nashville Predators) at a million decibels (what is with that anyway?)

First:  The Green Men

Here's their Fan Website
You can actually buy a C*nucks Hockey Jersey with  this
Green Men symbol on it....

Ya gotta love 'em.

They do their share of distracting the opposition. They do the Canucks a great service, even though the NHL doesn't acknowledge them.

They do their best work sitting next to the penalty box.  Check it out:

And again - watch what the hockey player does at the end:

Here the Green Men bait a Chicago Blackhawks player with a cardboard cutout of  Vince Vaughn - a Blackhawks fan - often seen in Chicago seating....Tonight they used Carrie Underwood's cutout - wearing a Canucks jersey (her husband is a Nashville Predator Hockey player):

How did they get the idea to do this?
In their own words:

"After watching an episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia", which is where the Green Men originates from, we both looked at each other and I do believe we actually yelled "Eureka" at the same time. It was a little weird, but we knew it was fate. We knew we had to become Green Men and go to a Canucks game. As for hesitations, there was a few... I mean we aren't really wearing anything so that was a concern... and the first game we went to, it was about -5, so as we walked from our car to GM Place, it was quite tempting to bail out. I'm sure glad we didn't though!"

'Nucks fans LOVE them!!!

To the opposition:  they are more annoying than Don Cherry .
And that's saying something!

Apparently the Green Men rattle the Predators so much, they have run whining to approached the NHL to stop the duo from distracting the players - even going as far as to try and ban them from the stadium - according to a tweet from the Green Men ONE HOUR AGO. Talk has it they are now instructed NOT TO TOUCH THE GLASS.....

Excuse me, but they are FANS just like the rest - and have paid for their seats. They are now a fixture, or at very least, a very fun side show, providing much-needed entertainment in what might otherwise be a very b-o-r-i-n-g game.....IMHO.

More on Don Cherry tomorrow!

* he got the puck as a Christmas gift from my friend Jan's husband.  Thought it was a coaster.

ADDENDUM: I can't belive this Google Search:
"
No way. Someone in Duncan, B.C. doesn't even know whether the Canucks have won the Stanley Cup or not????  I know Duncan is a little out of the way and slightly isolated due to being on the Island and all......but........EVERYONE.....even ME......she-who-hates-hockey - knows the answer to THAT one!!!!

A Royal Pain

Prince Harry is quite the Jokester. (you could tell yesterday, couldn't you??)

To keep up with her grandchildren, Queen Elizabeth was given an iPhone for Christmas a couple years ago.    Prince Harry, the Ginger of all Gingers,  decided to  preprogrammed it for her.

The message they put on it?

“Hey, wassup? This is Liz. Sorry I’m away from the throne. For a hotline to Philip press one, for Charles press two, for the corgis press three.”

The Queen's private secretary had the shock of his life when he discovered the "joke" and quickly had it removed.

The Queen, rumor had it, wasn't amused - at first.   When the dust settled, she could appreciate the humor in it, and wondered what VIPs might have heard it.

Which comes to the Twitter account I discovered recently, and had a great laugh reading back tweets.
You have to check it out!  It is hilarious.

And no, it's not *really* the Queen tweeting.

Speaking of gadgets and the Queen, one thing that might be useful for those who live in rainier climes......how about this umbrella?

The Queen's umbrella for $49.95

Personally, I like wearing hoodies in the rain.  Less cumbersome and because it's attached to me, I wouldn't forgetfully leave it behind everywhere I went.

Last Royal Wedding Post

One journalist hit the nail on the head re: The Bridal Dress back in January - suggesting that Kate would look best in a "Grace Kellyesque" type dress and even titling her article - " Kate Middleton in Grace Kelly's Wedding Gown"

Prince Rainier & Grace Kelly
1956

Prince William & Catherine
2011

A few things bothered me during The Production. (I am Canadian after all. We tend to be a slightly negative bunch.  We look for these things!)

1.     When coming into the church, Prince Charles (Kate's new father-in-law) took his gloves off, wiped his nose with the fingers of his right hand, then with the same hand - proceeded to shake hands with the entire line of clergy.

Not good.  Maybe no one else noticed, but the nurse in me cringed.*

2.     When William and Kate left the Abby in the open Landau.....he was all warm in not only a shirt and heavy jacket - but also heavy pants a hat and gloves.  Poor Kate only had on fine lacy sleeves and a dress that certainly - unless she was wearing long johns beneath - drafty.

It was cold.   Why wasn't there a nice little matching jacket for her to wear over top, or at least a lap blanket provided?   I would have been freezing to death.... it wasn't even warm, after all.

3.     On our TV station, Peter Mansbridge - the announcer - was downright annoying.

A fairy-tale wedding just wasn't the time for dredging up - and going on and on and on ad nauseum about Diana and the divorce and how badly things went with her and Charles marriage and ensuing bad feelings all the way around......and then making public the fact that he himself could have said some things to make his own marriage work......it just was, well,  unnecessary.

His comment that the "chuckle" the pair shared during the ceremony was, in his words, the "highlight" of the ceremony.....balderdash.   Was he even watching or listening to have made such a comment???

Thankfully, the TV could be muted and also the DVR (Canadian TiVo equivalent) fast-forwarded.

And so it ends.

Or begins......

********************
*And that, my people, is how you got your latest flu bug - just in case you didn't know!  Ick.  And why I don't shake hands.

I am not the only one that noticed.  Within minutes of posting this, I immediately had at least 5 google hits "Prince Charles wipes nose then shakes hands"

ADDENDUM:  It's now been 25 google hits for "Prince wipes nose and shakes hands"!  Glad people noticed.  Maybe this means that people are aware that this is not a good thing to do?

SECOND ADDENDUM: Another 20 googles about "Prince wipes nose and shakes hand".....wow. What's going on???

The Royal Programme of the Wedding

Here you go....

The Official Programme.

Now you can follow the ceremony as you watch the whole thing on TV.

Or - on Live Streaming Video

At the Wedding.......well at least in close proximity....

Some friends of mine planned a trip to London some time ago.

Unfortunately, or fortunately for them, it just happened to fall on the same dates that much later, William and Kate decided to set for their wedding!

So now they are serendipitously caught up in the Royal Kerfuffle, so to speak.

They were at the Palace, with a crowd already forming 16 hours in advance.  Prince William came out and mingled with the crowd around an hour after they left the area.

They just missed him!

The crowd is already gathering

Bobbies keeping the crowds in line

The Guard at Buckingham Palace: All is calm

The press is reporting non-stop

Hyde park has it's Ginormous screens set up

And what does it cost to rent here at Kensington? $1400 per WEEK

To buy a little over 1300 square foot "flat"? $2.5 million Canadian.

The temporary media building constructed just for the Wedding. Any coverage
you watch, will be from this building.

Getting ready!

So, just a little close-up as to what to expect if you are there...................

Here is the link to the route and also live streaming coverage if you are so inclined.

Me?

I will be working.

The West Virginia Eagle Mom: Killed by a Plane

Sad News.

The other day (April 26th) the Mother Eagle was struck by a plane and killed. She was approximately 14 years old. She and her partners (her original partner had also been killed by a plane several years before) had produced 19 eaglets.

The nest is situated next to the Norfolk airport. It apparently isn't uncommon for this to happen.

The decision was made for the young eagles to be removed from the next because the Father Eagle alone would not be able to keep up with the feeds.

In the next couple months the young eagles would triple in size and it would have meant that they would have starved, or killed the weakest in the nest to eat, in order to survive.

Here is the examination of the eaglet when first brought to the Botanical Garden in West Virginia:

Here is the video of the lone Male coming back to the empty nest:

Apparently, he brought a fish to the nest for the young ones to eat - and left it there when he found no babies.

So sad.

Meanwhile, the Provincial court here in B.C. will today decide whether it is the Aboriginal Right under the Constitution to kill, possess and traffic in Eagle carcasses and parts, even though it is against the Provincial Wildlife Act.

48 mutilated Carcasses were found near Squamish and North Vancouver.

Under the present law, it is illegal, without a permit, to possess or sell any eagle parts.

The penalty for poaching is a fine up to $50K or 6 months in jail. The penalty for trafficking in eagle parts is up to $100K fine and/or 1 year in jail.

Personally, 48 dead eagles, no matter what "rights" - is excessive in this day and age.

Meanwhile, here is yesterday's video of our White Rock eagles' nest being whipped around in the wind yesterday:

And the two eagles together in the wind the day before:

More of the Hockey Stick Effect

So - I am looking at who comes on my blog, and by what means they get here.........

I had to laugh.

Someone googled " Who won the Stanley Cup last night April 26,2011" and got to my blog.   Obviously, it wasn't a Canadian making the inquiry.

How can I tell?

Even if you hate Hockey...you have to be living underneath the grass not to know what's going on with the Hockey situation here in Canada.

No one won the Stanley Cup the other night....!

I think Vancouver wishes it was the last and final Stanley cup game.......sorry.......nope.

But - the celebrations and the libations  were limitless.....during Tuesday's game.

The beer sales went through the roof.   Sports friendly (read: Hockey friendly) establishments that served beer realized a 150% increase in sales during the game.  As far as I know, I don't believe anyone ran out of beer - unlike the Olympics.

It's been reported that more beer was consumed at the 2010 Olympics than the last two Winter Olympics combined.   It certainly caught the German House by surprise.   Underestimating Canadians affinity for beer, their supplies dwindled and they had to ship in more.

It's that Hockey Stick Effect at work again.

And here is where I might shock you with an admission:

Personally, I hate the brewski.  Not even a "good" one.

And I hate Hockey.

Some Canadian I am.......

Yes, Canucks have overthrown last Year's Stanley Cup Champions

Canucks....on to the second round

When the Stanley cup came to town a couple months ago
People lined up for a mile to have their photo taken with the Cup.
And to touch it.

You would think by the Celebrations that are going on at the moment in Vancouver, that the Canucks have already won the Stanley cup.

It was a heartstopping game.  In overtime.

Chicago Blackhawks are down for the count.

On for the win, Canucks!!!!

This, my dear American friends and relatives, is what Canadians find riveting this week and for the next month.

Not the Royal Wedding.

HOCKEY.

There was a double rainbow at the start of the game in Vancouver last night
We all know what effect double rainbows have on people.

Remember the "hockey stick effect" I mentioned in a previous post?  People will actually delay medical care and suffer - until a game is over.   Right now, at this moment, here in B.C.,  you will find people either celebrating and forgetting all about their problems, or they will wander in to the ED en mass.....now the game is over.

Seating at the Royal Wedding: Where I would be sitting....

You can see where I have noted "CC: sits with the Foreign Royal families since I am descendant of the King of Ireland and also Charlemagne".

On my father's side, we are Irish.   There is a castle in the County Cavan that belongs to our family.  I have never been there, but would love to go in a couple years.

On my mother's side, I have a documented "pedigree chart" that lists our family all the way back to Charlemagne....King of the Franks and Emperor of the Romans.

I think that qualifies me to sit in that light blue section of the chart seating -  in the South Lantern.

Now if flying didn't freak me out so much........

I might actually be there!

I already sent my regrets.

Signage - Leaving it to guesswork....

One is used to a bathroom sign that looks like this:

What I wasn't expecting, were the "signage" on the doors of the other two restroom/washrooms.

Do you know which one you would go into?

A little presumptuous, perhaps?

;)

Wedding Dress Trivia - Royal Inspiration

It's getting closer to *that* Royal wedding.

Did you know that White as the color most brides wear for their Wedding ceremony is a direct influence of the British Royal Family?

History has it that Queen Victoria started that tradition in 1840 - and although she wasn't the first documented Royal to do so - she was the one that popularized it among the common population.

She had a length of beautiful lace she wanted incorporated into her wedding gown, and since the lace was white.....the dress color chosen was - white!

Just as it happens today, her published wedding photo inspired brides-to-be wanting the same for themselves.

So, all you who think the white is for virginity.......nope.  It isn't.   If you wish to wear the color that traditionally symbolizes virginity - blue is your color.

Before Queen Victoria, many other colors were worn by the bride - one of the popular colors being - black - if you lived in Scandinavia.

In China and India, red is the traditional color that brides choose  - red being the color of good luck and fortune.

My girlfriend in Japan wore a pink dress at her wedding.

I wore gold.

It is rumored that Miss Middleton wishes to wear a wreath of flowers on her head.  Apparently this is causing more than a few ruffled feathers at the palace, where it is expected that she should choose from one of the many tiaras.

What did Queen Victoria wear?

You guessed it! A wreath of flowers.

Queen Victoria's Wedding portrait

It's anyone's guess what Catherine will wear on her wedding day.

One thing I know, bets are being made in Las Vegas right at this moment on every single detail about the wedding that you can imagine........

Easter Brunch

If you are ever making a brunch or having a group of people over for breakfast, here is a very easy recipe that will have your company ooh!-ing and ahhh!-ing - making them think that you have slaved away all day preparing this fancy little treat for breakfast/brunch!

Put a small amt of water in empty holes to save your tin from damage
Grease your muffin pan with olive oil
Line with finely sliced ham (spicy ham would be tasty!)
Crack a whole egg into each lined tin

Pour one Tablespoon of cream over the egg
Sprinkle one heaping Tablespoon of Swiss Cheese (or other flavorful cheese) over egg/cream
Sprinkle fresh chopped basil or dried basil over cheese

Bake in 350F oven for 20 minutes (depending on how well you like your egg done! Soft maybe 15 min)

Lift out of tin and place on buttered toasted 1/2 English muffin
Serve on buffet or each individual plate

This is what my plate looks like.  I put salsa over my egg nest

It definitely is a quick and easy breakfast - and less mess to clean up!   Plus - you get your whole breakfast all-in-one.....and much classier than an egg mcmuffin!!!

The buffet with egg nests at the end

Spa Sisters Skin Polisher

Just LOVE this product!!!

Oh my!  Tried these out, and if you can't reach your back to scrub it, and no one to do it for you....give this a try! Love, love, love them!!!

It's definitely on my "must-have" list, and also makes an inexpensive gift!

More Bird Talk: Chickadees!

Fifteen years ago, an old boyfriend of mine gave me a birdhouse that his father had made. I thought it was a cute little thing....lovely colors and well constructed.

checking out the birdhouse - before I moved it
I used it as decor around my yard, not ever thinking that any bird would want to nest in it never mind  fit through the small hole!

The only thing that ever tried to nest in it were a family of wasps.

This past week, we had some little visitors that have been busy hauling moss from the neighbor's flower baskets.....

Chickadees!!!

They are so cute - that little pair of birds!

I had just haphazardly placed the birdhouse at chest level near the hot tub last fall, not thinking a bird would actually want it as a home.

When I noticed the chickadees going in and out of the house, I moved it first to the nine foot level, then over to another corner of the patio, out of reach of the cat - among the branches of the wisteria tree.

You can see one of the chickadees peeping out the door
I can't believe the wildlife around here!

Trains and Birds

If you ever have the opportunity to travel by train anywhere....do it!

That's how I moved to California.......boarded in Seattle - got off in Martinez, CA.

Amtrak crossing the border
When I used to live in White Rock, the train was a part of the ambiance of the place.

A small sleepy seaside community - it reminded me a bit of Santa Cruz, CA - with the sidewalk cafes, sunny weather, beaches - the tide going in and out.

Running through, along the whole length of the beach is the train - at approximately 8 to 8:30 every am and pm  - and sometimes in the afternoon.

Usually the afternoon train is the passenger train AMTRAK -  full of tourists.   You could see all the people with noses pressed against the glass  admiring the view and waving at the pedestrians out for a pleasant sunny stroll along the seawalk.

White Rock pier, Semiahmoo (WA) in the distance
The train passes by - just beyond that blue fence!

It's that same train you can just barely see at the top of the screen of the Eagle cam - and definitely you can hear the whistle as it rolls past beneath the nest.

If you ever have the opportunity to ride that train from Seattle to Vancouver - make sure to look straight up just after you go through the town of White Rock.  You will see the Eagles nest - the same one on the Cam - directly above you!

******************************

Speaking of trains, we watched "Unstoppable" last night on our "Man Cave Movie Screen" downstairs.

I would highly recommend it!  Apparently based on a true story.

Yes, it's that good!

Mom Feeding the Eaglet - Video

You can see the newer baby eaglet flopping around.  It doesn't have as much muscle tone and control as the older one.

The parent is feeding the older eaglet.

You can hear my husband making commentary in the background.  I was trying to get him to be quiet for the video, because you can actually hear the chirping of the babies.

I just recorded this within the last 15 minutes.

Sorry Phiddy, that you missed this!  This all occurred 1/2 hour after you left your comment! :(

Photos of the Eaglet and Egg with a crack in it...

Last night when I was watching the Eagle was feeding it's new baby, I noticed the other egg - it had a crack in it! It was beginning to hatch!

I am not sure when the first one hatched but we have been watching the cam daily and up until now, I had not seen any babies - only eggs.

It's unusual to have the eggs hatch in the same day, so perhaps the first one had already hatched the day before sometime....

Sorry these photos of the cam are so blurry. If you go to the cam itself, the video stream is amazingly high definition and you can even see the feathers of the eagle moving in the wind....the best nature cam I have seen to date.

The owners of the property paid for and installed the cam at their own expense.

One thing I do notice, is that the Train coming up from the USA makes itself known by a whistle several times a day - and you can see it pass under the nest on the closeup in the evening when it's lights are on.

Sometimes I miss living in White Rock.

Terbutaline for Preterm Labor - Should it be used?

I did my L&D training in the East Bay Area of San Francisco.

One of the routine practices, although not approved by the FDA, was the "off label" use of Terbutaline or "Brethine" (bronchodilator) to treat pre-term Labor.

We gave sub-q injections, followed by oral pill form when stable, as routine practice.

I never really questioned it at the time because that was the standard protocol we would follow for preterm labor in those days.

When I moved back to Canada, I noticed the glaring absence of Terbutaline on the labor units.  In fact, none of the gals I worked with had even heard of it.

I asked one of the OB docs why it wasn't used in Canada.  At the time,  his reply shocked me.

"Because" he stated, "it isn't proven to be effective in stopping labor."

I can only speak for British Columbia, but as a practice, the primary treatment for preterm labor seventeen years ago when I moved back to Canada,  was the administration of fluids and  Indomethacin  or perhaps nifedipine - in the five different hospitals I worked.  We may have even used MgS04 a time or two before it went by the wayside. "Bedrest" was a joke, really.

I remembered back to my California days when we would care for pregnant moms-to-be in what was classified  as "Preterm labor".   The monitor recorded "contractions" would quickly smooth out with the administration of Terbutaline.  So really, what was it doing, if it wasn't stopping preterm labor?

I suppose a clue can be found in this question - What is the definition of preterm labor?

True Preterm Labor is gauged only by the progressive change in the cervix by contractions (between 20 and 36 weeks gestation) -  not by the contractions alone.

When a health care worker is assessing contractions, it is necessary to palpate contraction strength with hands on the abdomen and actually feel them.  The appearance of the bumps on the monitor isn't an indication of their strength - and yet how often do we see this as the sole determination of contractions?

There is debate that the contractions appearing on the monitor that were "smoothed out" by the terbutaline were even strong enough to do anything in the first place.  Basically, what we were actually doing with the "Terb", is getting rid of the irritability that was appearing so the mom didn't have to be kept in the hospital any longer than necessary.  No contractions = discharge = less expense.

The truth about terbutaline is that there is a lack of controlled studies that support the use and it may even do harm.

So how do we treat preterm Labor?

In B.C. there has been an increase in the number of preterm births - especially noted in the 33 to 36 wk age group, immature lung development being the most challenging problem as a result.

Because of the advanced maternal age of the women giving birth in recent years, and also the fact that older moms have a higher instance of multiple births which in turn are also are more susceptible to preterm birth... it makes sense that the statistics have been on the rise.

But - guess what?

"Clinical trials have not been able to demonstrate a reduction in preterm births from the following prevention strategies: home uterine activity monitoring, frequent digital cervical exams, bedrest for twin pregnancies, tocolytics, and education about the signs of preterm labor among women with identifiable risks."

So, as far as tocolytics go, according to our province's policy for Perinatal Services in B.C., "there is no evidence demonstrating that the use of tocolytics to arrest preterm labor  results in a reduction of preterm mortality" - both long and short term administration.

In our province, the only tocolytic recommended is Indomethacin - and only up to 32 weeks gestation - and the primary aim in its administration is to give Betamethasone a chance to mature a baby's lungs and to ensure a safe transfer to a facility that can adequately care for the premature infant.

I can remember a brief time when Magnesium Sulphate (MgS04) was given for pre term labor. It has since been shown to not only be an ineffective tocolytic, but its use is associated with an increase in mortality for the infant.  It is strongly advised by BC Perinatal Services not to use MgS04 as a tocolytic.

Another medication I have seen used is nitroglycerin.  Apparently there is no evidence supporting the use of nitro as a tocolytic either.

When I worked south of the border, every woman who walked in through the door in preterm labor had an IV started.  Surprisingly, there is no evidence supporting  IV hydration to prevent or arrest preterm labor.

Definitely it can benefit a woman who is dehydrated, which, when I lived in a very hot area of Canada in the summer, we would see plenty of those.  In the hospitals I worked in North of the border, we were more likely to hand them fluid to drink rather than an IV infusion.

One will find that bedrest is still recommended for those singleton moms in preterm labor,  both sides of the border - either at home or in the hospital.  Interestingly,  there is no evidence for or against bedrest in the prevention of preterm births.

Even for twin pregnancy - there is no evidence supporting routine hospitalization for bedrest in the prevention of preterm birth - and until there is a study that shows otherwise, BC perinatal policy states there is no indication for this practice as routine.

So, what is left if nothing really works?

Basically, the use of cervical ultrasound and the use of fibromectin test are useful in identifying those moms in preterm labor who need to be stabilized and transported (with infant in utero) to a facility that can adequately care for a premature infant and the results can possibly be used to reduce the number of interventions done to the woman - such as the unnecessary use of tocolytics for those not at risk and more appropriate identification of those who can benefit.   Read here for the discussion on this (5.3 and 7.2).

So - what do we do when we know that evidence based medicine is best ?  When what we have done in the care of pregnant woman for since forever is not what research shows we should be doing?

Why are clinical trials and research done if it isn't going to change the way we do things?

The Vote Compass

Conservative-Liberal-
NewDemocrat-BlocQ
 For you Canadians out there:

Where do you stand?   Take the quiz.  It may help you decide which party's policies are in line with yours if you haven't already decided which way you will vote. (if you are from elsewhere, you can see in what direction you might vote!!)

Some who have taken the quiz are quite surprised with where they sit on the political compass.  Not what they would expect.

For the Americans out there:

This is our fourth federal election in seven years.   There was a non-confidence vote March 26th,  forcing another election.   Most Canadians didn't want it.  But there it is.

The election date? May 2, 2011.

A little over a month of campaigning and it's all over with, which may baffle Americans who are used to drawn out election campaigns......but that's the politics here.  Don't drag it out. Just keep repeating it over and over again.

As for William and Kate's wedding:  Our prime minister has had to decline the invitation because he will be too busy with campaigning.

Insider Information

Ok - so you weren't invited to the Royal Wedding.....

Here is a glimpse as to what it might be like...JK style

AND....this is how they did it....

So....now you know.

And now you don't have to feel sorry when you miss the whole production, because the reproduction above is much more fun!!

The Hockey Stick Effect

the old school emblem of the
Vancouver Canucks
Hockey. (and here you thought this post was about graphs!)

It's a sport dear to most Canadians' hearts.

So much so, that during the Olympics hockey game USA vs CANADA - an Air Canada flight was delayed by passengers ignoring final boarding calls and refusing to board because of the heart pounding, nail biting overtime finish of The Game - USA vs CANADA -  they were watching on the Airport TV screens.  (Canada won!)

Recently, once again, something else even bigger challenged  Hockey - and lost.

Politics.

There were two Federal  Political Debates scheduled - one in English, the other in French.  Apparently, the Français debate was initially scheduled for the same evening as the Montreal/Boston hockey game - going into the FINALS.

An informal poll taken by The Globe and Mail indicates that 62% of the responders felt that the date should be changed.

The organizers of the debate and the politicians recognized the conflict as problematic and realized where Canadians' obsessions lie...... and they switched the date.

Both the NDP and the Bloc Quebec leaders admitted Canadians would choose to watch hockey over the Federal election debate.

Hockey is truly a force to be reckoned with.

Everyone and everything else revolves around this National Sport.

Truly.

In Canada, the world stops for Hockey.

My American husband is getting into the Hockey frenzy, and he now realizes that the Hockey Puck given to him by my friend Jan's husband one Christmas past - is NOT *just* a coaster.......

Do You Vote?

Canada has a Federal election on May 2nd, which, incidentally and ironically, happens to fall on the last day that we can, as Canadians, submit our Income Tax.

It seems, according to statistics, that students don't vote.

I thought back to when I was a student....and it's true. I didn't think of voting. I knew what was going on...but I didn't do anything about it. I was too busy with the other things going on in my life.

And, after all - what difference could it make -  to me?

Rick Mercer is the Canadian equivalent of Stephen Colbert or Jon Stewart - delivering political satire to Canadians. He has a popular TV show: The Rick Mercer Report.

A challenge was sent out:

Watch this: "Voting 101" for Students, by Rick Mercer - on his show:

And amazingly enough, Students responded:

The movement - "Vote Mob" at the universities across the country started in Guelph. You can find quite a few different videos made by the students at different University across the country.

The message is all the same: It doesn't matter how you vote...just get out and VOTE.

It's your right.

Lady Gaga and The Royal Wedding

Let's just say you are a commoner engaged to a Prince, a future King of England.

Let's just say you met at College, and now there is a group of guys from that college you attended that is paying homage to your engagement and future marriage.

They aren't your usual singers.

No - they are disgruntled would-be suitors.

Oh well.

It can't be any worse than the "Official Initials" fiasco.

What the official china's embossing should have looked like

What the official souvenirs are now embossed with

When I first saw the WC - I laughed.  I got it right away.

In Britain the abbreviation "WC" stands for the old  "Water Closet" which is British-speak for Toilet, or Biffy, or Can or Washroom - if you are Canadian, or if you are American - Restroom.

Thankfully, for the Royal Couple-to-be, changes were made before all the formal china was fired at the Royal china factory....to avoid the "Royal Flush" jokes that would surely ensue.

BUT - If you ever find the former initials on anything - "WC" - they will soon be expensive collector's items.

This is the first time that Tradition has been broken, and the bride's initials are put first - before the Royal.

See?  Even the stuffy Monarchy can break with tradition, if the situation is just right.

Meanwhile, here is a FREEBIE you can download in honor of the Royal Newlyweds-to-be:  George Michael singing Stevie Wonder's song - "You and I".

You're welcome!

A Care home Visit Today

Today I made a trip to visit my elderly Aunt Millie* who had been transferred from her group home to a nursing home.  She is no longer able to mobilize, and finally, after a fall at the home - was moved out to the "new place".

My mother was worried that Aunt Millie, her sister, might not adjust to the change.

Aunt Millie had never married, and she relies on the rest of the family - her brother and sisters -  to deal with the arrangements of her care.

She is a real sweetheart - a simple soul.

Arriving unannounced,  as soon as I walked through the door, she knew who I was and called out my name.

A big hug and a kiss later, I guided her wheelchair back up to her room so we could have some private time to visit.

The nursing home is an older home in an established neighborhood.  Nice big yard.  Meals are provided. My aunt's Canadian pension covers everything -  with a little left over for essentials and the occasional splurge.  My husband looked at the photos of the home and told me he wished his brother had a nice place like that to stay in his final days.

Nurse that I am, I snooped around the place a bit.

The bathrooms are spacious and very clean.  No "hospital" smells about.  It just seems like a regular home - except it isn't.

I peeked in a few rooms - they all seem to be about the same, with two single "hospital style" beds in each room.  You know, the old kind that I haven't seen since the '70s with the handles at the foot of the bed that you have to crank the head or foot up or down.

Aunt Millie can't walk anymore, so I wheeled her around.  I tried to get her to stand, at least - to see how she manages.  Very unsteady.

My aunt in the hallway
I realized she won't be using her walker anymore, but she still asked where it was.

I went through some exercises she could do while sitting in her wheelchair.  Then she asked me:

" Am I going to get worse?"

What could I say?  It didn't look good.  I doubt that they have any aggressive physio programs at this place.  Even if they did - there is only so much muscle tone she will regain.

After all, she is over 80 years old.  But - her father did live to 100.

All I could do is sit there and try and hide the tear trickling down my cheek.

She didn't seem to notice.

Her Psalter Hymn book was lying on her bedside table and I picked it up.   Together we sang some of her old favorite hymns - some I hadn't sang for decades.  The sound of Her warbling voice singing those songs of old with such a conviction seared my heart.  It was all I could do to get to the end of the chorus.

I admire this lady.  She has struggled with schizophrenia for the last 55 years.

She was committed to  Riverview - at that time a horrible institution.  She said she hated it there because she said the food made her sick.  Matter-of-factly she told of the insulin administered to put her into seizures** - the current treatment back then.    Multiple ECTs followed.

I remember my Mom telling me that she had almost died once.

Then all the medications, the extrapyramidal side effects from her antipsychotics.  The psychotic episodes when the medications didn't work.  The torment of having schizophrenia.

Through it all, she kept her faith.

She never did have those outrageous religious ideations that some get with the psychotic episodes.

She still has her worries.  Her heartaches.  She still misses her mom and pop - although they have been gone for 25 and 18 years respectively.

As I left her at the door, I gave her another hug and kiss.

"I pray for you every night " she whispered in my ear.

I am humbled.

**Recent articles about insulin coma treatment have attempted to explain why it was given such uncritical acceptance. In the United States Deborah Doroshow writes that insulin coma therapy secured its foothold in psychiatry not because of scientific evidence or knowledge of any mechanism of therapeutic action, but due to the impressions it made on the minds of the medical practitioners within the local world in which it was administered and the dramatic recoveries they saw in some patients. Today, she writes, those who were involved are often ashamed, recalling it as unscientific and inhumane. Administering insulin coma therapy made psychiatry seem a more legitimately medical field. Harold Bourne, who questioned the treatment at the time, is quoted: "It meant that psychiatrists had something to do. It made them feel like real doctors instead of just institutional attendants".  wikipedia excerpt per link
